What Happens When Your Dreams Shatter Around You? |I Do Disney #3 | Sitting In The Clouds

For some people, life gets handed to them on a nice silver plate and sometimes even by a butler. For others, we have to work our butts off just to get by. But what happens when your dream, that used to feel exactly that, a dream, starts becoming a possible reality? You may get ahead of yourself, already imagining yourself living that dream, whatever it may be. You might get so caught up in your dream, you feel like it’s already happening. For me that dream was Disney, more precisely, working at Walt Disney World on their Cultural Exchange Program. It’s been my dream to work for “the mouse” as they say since I was a little girl. I’ve been lucky enough to be brought up with a Disney filled childhood and as I grew up that love blossomed into a dream to work there.

429966_3935664588084_194765003_n

For me, that dream was always possible if I took that step into the unknown. Disney has a program where university students, from all around the world, have the opportunity to work in the most magical place on earth during their summer break. This year I applied. In August, I received an email, I had been invited to a pre-screen interview. I was over the moon, my dream was slowly but surely becoming a reality. But like most people, or it may just be me, but I got ahead of myself. Getting that interview felt like I had reached my dream, in my head, I was going. I got too excited, my mum even started looking for hotels when I would be there next summer for god’s sake. My whole family had faith in me, my boyfriend even got me a custom t-shirt with “cast member in training” on it. Everyone who surrounded me only made those feelings grow and I even started saving, preparing myself for all the fees, making jokes that I would miss my yearly dentist checkup.

Last week, that dream came shattering around me. They had decided to not move me on in the application. I think my heart physically broke and so did my tear ducts, I cried and then cried some more as I told people and they hugged me with their apologises. My dad was the only person throughout this whole process that kept my feet firmly on the ground every time I spoke to him about it. Even when I told him that I didn’t get past the first interview stage he still said: “it’s not the end of the world”. It’s not what you want to hear when your own little bubble has popped and for you, your world has ended for the time being. But my dad was right. It’s not the end of the world, even if I didn’t want to hear it at the time.

img_2292

It’s been just over a week since I found out that my summer will not consist of making memories and magic for others next year, and it’s still sore to talk about and I end the conversation if anyone brings it up, but I’m okay. Walt’s dreams did not get handed to him on a plate. He didn’t randomly draw Mickey Mouse one day and overnight build Disneyland. He had his own struggles in the world, he was poor, he couldn’t afford to pay his rent and ended up homeless for a while. If it’s your dream, you have to work hard to achieve it, end of.

A wise man once said, “all your dreams can come true if you have the courage to pursue them”. Courage is being able to show strength in a time of pain. I have to be thankful that I even got invited to a face-to-face to interview. Thousands apply and only a few hundred get interviews. This is not my only chance to achieve my dreams. I will be applying next year, and the year after if that’s what it takes. I will not give up on my dream after failing to achieve it once. Life is all about knockbacks, and after them, you only come up stronger.

The result of my interview hit me like a tidal wave, I ate my weight in chocolate that night. But it’s okay to cry sometimes as long as you come back fighting harder than ever.

What are your dreams, are you chasing them? Let’s chat in the comments.

until next time,
xoxo, rachel

P.S. It feels good to be back…haha!

30 Before 30 | Sitting In The Clouds

I recently turned 20 and it occurred to me how little I’ve done with my life so far and how much I want to achieve. My little head is full of dreams and aspirations and even though I’m not even near my half way mark on my life, I’m starting to panic. By the time I’m 30, I want to feel stable and happy with my life. That’s far from where I am right now.  I shouldn’t really be worrying at all, 10 years is a long time. I can barely remember turning 10 and in those ten years, I finished full time education, begun and ended teenage hood, learnt to drive, been to Disney countless times, had a 4 year long relationship, made and lost friends, brought my first lottery ticket, celebrated Christmas ten times, changed so much as a person and done things I can’t even remember. I don’t think my 10 year old self wouldn’t recognise me right now. But being the list maker, planner junkie and organiser that I am, I’ve created a list of 30 things I want to do before I turn the big 3-0!

>1 Participate in the Disney Cultural Exchange Program
>2 Have a Degree
>3 Explore Australia & New Zealand
>4 Get Married
>5 Start a Family
>6 Work for Disney (HQ in Hammersmith)
>7 Help Rays of Sunshine grant a wish
>8 Do a Professional Internship at Disney (Burbank, Florida)
>9 See my designs somewhere in the public eye
>10 Meet my Kiwi friend
>11 Have a home library and office (aka own a house)
>12 Visit every Disney resort, including California, Shanghai, Tokyo, Paris, Orlando and Hong Kong
>13 Have a fitness routine I love and stick to
>14 Learn how to do a french plait
>15 Have my first nightclub experience (yes, I’m 20 and haven’t actually been on a proper night out)
>16 Own something designer (a handbag or a high end makeup product)
>
17 Meet at least one more actor from FRIENDS (I have met Matthew Perry)
>18 Have a stayaction in Brighton
>19 Go to a restaurant and only order dessert
>20 Go to a cinema and see the next film showing
>21 Celebrate a birthday aboard
>22 Own a dog (preferably a German Shephard)
>23 Have a “well stocked” savings account
>24 Continue bullet journalling and own all the different Leuchtturm1917 coloured notebooks.
>25 Own a vintage style polaroid
>26 Make sure I continually keep in contact with my three closest friends
>27 Keep up with my blog and have a custom domain name
>28 Enjoy a Disney cruise (stopping at their private island)
>29 Do some freelance graphic design work
>30 Stay in a treehouse villa

This list may be overly ambitious but it could be achievable. I guess I’ll find out in 10 years. If I have completed all these dreams of mine, I’ll be a very happy 30 year old and I won’t be worrying on my 30th birthday, much like Rachel Green or Joey Tribbiani from FRIENDS did….“Why God Why?! We had a deal, let the others grow old, not me!”

What’s on the top of your bucket list? Let’s chat in the comments.

until next time,

…And So The Journey Begins! | I Do Disney #1 | Sitting In The Clouds

Hey there, hi there, ho there, it’s a Disney kind of day. Glad to see your smiling faces as we pass along the way. There’s lots of fun and laughter here, all waiting just for you. All you gotta do make a wish, and watch your dreams come true….🎤🎧

cimg8646

Today I embarked on the biggest, most exciting, scariest and most utterly nerve-recking journey of my life. Today I applied for the Disney Cultural Exchange Program. Don’t know what this is? It’s a chance for university students to spend their summer break working in Walt Disney World. It’s a three month long program, usually lasting from June to August. You have to be at least 18 years of age, have one year of studying behind you, and speak fluent english to apply. (Read my “Motivation, No Regrets & Taking Chances” post to hear more about it and why I want to apply)

This has been a dream of mine since a very young age and so today was a massive milestone for me. Hitting that “submit” button was so exciting but now it’s just a waiting game. I have done all I can do for the time being. I will find out if I got through to the pre-screen interview around late August to early September.

The reason I’ve started up this mini blog series, #IDoDisney is so I can…

  1. Help others – when researching and learning all about this experience, I found so many videos and blogs about americans applying, their program is called the Disney College Program, and it’s slightly different, but I barely found anyone talking about the DCEP (Disney Cultural Exchange Program, the program for UK and Canadians applicants) so therefore I want to try and help others and be a reliable source for other applicants.
  2. For me – I want something to look back on and know how I was feeling at the time. Of course this series may start and end with this blog post as the demand for this program is extremely high so the chance of getting through is low. However, I will be applying for this program until I am no longer eligible so being able to look back when applying again, I think will be very useful. But hopefully that won’t happen.

At the end of the day, this is my dream and I will work my butt off to achieve it. If you want to know more and understand why this is such a big deal for me, I explain everything in my “Motivation, No Regrets & Taking Chances” blog post.

Let me know if you are a fellow applicant for the summer of 2018 so we can chat and go through this journey together. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments, I’ll be happy to reply to you all. I want to do another blog post soon all about the first step of the application process so let me know if you have any enquires about anything I said in today’s blog post.

I’ve made my wish so now all I have to do is “watch my dreams come true..”. Wish me luck!

until next time,
xoxo, rachel

My Favourite Blog Posts of 2016 | Sitting In The Clouds

TWITTER | INSTAGRAM

Welcome Back!!! On May 22nd 2016 I decided to take the jump and start up my own blog, that little space on the internet that’s yours, where you can talk about whatever you want and share your passions. I’ve been blogging for less than a year yet I’m so proud of what I’ve achieved so far. It’s crazy to think that it’s 2017 already but I want to look back over last year and review some of my favourite blog posts I’ve published in the short amount of time I’ve been blogging. If you’re new then this is a great way to explore my blog and get to know me on a more personal level. If you’ve been following me since the start then I want to thank you for your continued support and hope you enjoy yet another blog post from me anyway.

1) Am I Really Sitting In The Clouds? How can I not mention my first ever blog post? To this day, nearly a year on, I still go back to this blog post and read it to see how far I’ve come but also because I think it’s a really fun post. It explains the meaning behind my blog name and really shows off my personality. It’s had over 60 views and I’m really proud of it.

By the way these are in no particular order. They are just either blog posts that I really enjoyed writing and taking photos for or just love reading back months after I wrote them. My blog is a little capsule of my life so I love reading back my own blog posts. Let me know that I’m not the only one.

2) All About The Magic – This blog post showcases just a few of the fantastic photos and memories I created when I went to Walt Disney World with my family and boyfriend back in August. This blog post is only a glimmer into how incredible that holiday was and I will cherish those memories forever.

3) Living With An Invisible Illness – This is and probably will be the most personal blog post that’s up on the internet for everyone to see. October 8th 2015 I had a kidney transplant because all my life I’ve been suffering with Chronic Kidney Disease so this blog post was all about how I coped with living with an illness no-one can see and how the transplant experience was. I had butterflies when hitting the publish button but I’m so glad its out there now. My illness is part of who I am not who I am.

4) My Go-To Autumn Makeup Look – I spent so much time and effort on this blog post. I actually filmed myself creating the look and then took screenshots from the video. It came out exactly how I wanted it too and it’s one of my favourite blog posts I’ve done to date.

fall-look-complete-2

5) Cute and Cosy OOTD – This post to date is the most liked blog post I have done. It’s received so much love and I’m so happy you guys enjoyed it so much. I love doing OOTD posts but don’t do them too often because unless I have to dress up, I tend to just throw on a jumper, jeans and a pair of uggs and head out the door.

6) First Impressions: Morphe 35T Palette – My first ever first impressions post and it’s about one of my favourite eyeshadow palettes (it features in my 2016 favourites). Since receiving the Morphe 35T palette I haven’t used any other, I just love it so much. This blog post includes swatches as well as my thoughts on it after only a couple days of messing around with it.

img_3020

7) How Much Is My Face Worth? This was a super fun blog post to do. I added up every makeup item I put on my face to see how much my face was worth. It was a really interesting blog post to do and really opened my eyes to how much every cost when added together. I’m not even a fan of high end products and mainly just use drugstore. This blog post was a mini little trend going around the blogosphere when I first started.

img_1940.jpg

8) I GOT A TATTOO!!! – Like I mentioned previously my blog is like a little time capsule of my life and this blog post defiantly captures one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Back in July, I got a tattoo and it was so scary yet so exciting and this blog post is all about my experience with some pictures of how the tattoo came out. I still love my tattoo to this day and wouldn’t change it for the world.

So those were my top eight blog posts I’ve written in 2016 and I hope you enjoyed reading them just as much enjoyed writing them. Here’s to another fantastic year of awesome blog posts and content. I can’t believe I’ve been blogging consistently for eight months and I’m loving every minute and can’t wait for my blogging journey to continue.

Thank you for all your support since May and I hope you have a nosey around at my favourite blog posts of 2016. Let me know in the comments what your favourite blog post of mine has been this year. I would love to know so I can do similar ones in the future.

until next time,

xoxo, rachel

The Christmas Tag | Sitting In The Clouds

TWITTER | INSTAGRAM

Welcome Back!!! A post on a Thursday? It’s a bonus one but how could I not do a post to celebrate the fact that it’s the 1st of December today? Christmas is my favourite time of year and I can’t believe we have all officially started the countdown to Christmas!! Anyway, Jess from BeautyByJessBlog did this tag and then tagged everyone and I thought this was the perfect post to do today.

(banner picture: my own)

What’s your favourite Christmas film?

And so the hard questions begin. I can’t pick one…Home Alone and Nativity along with The Polar Express are films I love and make sure I watch each year. If I don’t watch these three films it’s not Christmas. Home Alone 1 and 2 have already been watched this year.

Have you ever had a white Christmas?

Yes. I live in the UK so it’s not rare to have a white Christmas. However, we haven’t had any proper snow, let alone on Christmas for a couple of years now so I’m really hoping for some this year.

Where do you usually spend your holiday?

It depends. This year Christmas is at my house but we alternate between our home and my aunties house. This is because my auntie alternates years spending Christmas with our side of the family and her husbands side of the family. However, this year I’m truly going to miss my little cousins as Christmas and Santa is all still so real for them and just seeing their faces excited is so cute.

What’s your favourite Christmas song?

I love every Christmas song but my all time favourite is “Step Into Christmas” by Elton John.

Screen Shot 2016-11-30 at 20.04.32.png

(click image to hear the song)

Do you open any presents on Christmas Eve?

When my sister and I were little we used to open one on Christmas Eve but it always pjs we would wear Christmas Eve and it was a little tradition of ours. Now we are older we don’t open any of Christmas Eve, although I am guilty for looking for my own under the Christmas tree and trying to guess what I’ve got…opsie!!

Can you name all of Santas reindeers?

Nope and I’m not even gunna try. Rudolph is the favourite and only one you really need to know, yeah?

What holiday traditions are you looking forward to most this year?

I love all my family’s Christmas tradition’s, we have quite a few which I will make sure to carry on with my kids. However, one of my favourite festive sayings is “eat, drink and be merry” and I just can’t wait to be on Christmas break from uni and chill out with family and friends, eat and drink loads and not care about the food baby I’ll 100% get.

Is your Christmas tree real or fake?

Just like where I spend my Christmas, this alternates. If we are spending Christmas at home, we get a real tree and also put up our fake one…yes TWO trees, but if we are spending Christmas at my aunties, we just stick with our fake. I’m actually off to buy our Christmas tree this year this Saturday and I’m so excited.

This was my family and I putting our Christmas tree up last year.

What is your all time favourite holiday food or sweet treat?

PIGS IN BLANKETS!!! oh and Mozzarella sticks. My family has always had the tradition for as long as I can remember to have buffets Christmas Day evening while we are watching all the Christmas trash on television and also Boxing Day evening and I always make sure those two foods are within the mix.

This was me and some of my family digging in to it last year, and yes my uncle probably had too much mulled wine, haha!!

2015_december_christmas-12

Be honest, do you prefer giving or receiving gifts?

Both! I love the opening presents and if you don’t, something is wrong with you. However, I absolutely LOVE buying gifts. This year, I have gone above and beyond anything I have ever done before for a Christmas present, and of course that Christmas present is for Tom. I wish I could explain it all to you about what I have planned but he reads my blog and it’s a huge surprise so I don’t want to ruin it for him.

Whats the best Christmas present you have received?

I’m so blessed to have received some amazing gifts over the years that I can’t pin point a specific one. Two years ago I got my dream pair of UGGs, my Chocolate Minis and last year I got my long wished for Ugg earmuffs, can you tell I love Ugg products? haha!! I wish I could remember more of the amazing gifts I have received but what can I say…I’m one lucky girl to be treated so well by loved ones each year.

What would your dream place be visit during the holiday season?

I’m going to let you guess before I say anything….got an idea??

DISNEYWORLD!!!!!!!!! But who wouldn’t?! It’s on my bucket list to actually spend Christmas Day in Disney because that would just be incredible!!!!

2100969777_dc02643bf0_o.jpg

I have been lucky enough to spend New Years Eve at Disney while it still had all its Christmas magic. However, I think actually spending Christmas Day there would be a whole new level of Disney magic.

And to finish off this tag I thought I’d share with you a picture of me on Christmas morning 1999, that means I was 2 and a half years old.

381589_2513834403218_1427699971_n.jpg

That’s it. It’s December and the countdown to Christmas has officially begun. I can’t wait and although I want Christmas to hurry the f*** up, I also want to savour it. I hope you all have an amazing festive season and spend it with friends and family. Remember this season is the time for giving so give when and whatever you can to people who are less fortunate.

until next time,

xoxo, rachel
