Mini Library Haul | Sitting In The Clouds

The last time I stepped inside my local library was three years ago in 2014. Why? Because I personally prefer to buy my books brand new. I’m not a fan of secondhand books, the feeling and the smell sometimes aren’t that appealing to me. Also my library doesn’t have the best selection of books that I’m interested in…aka YA. However, as I keep repeating on my blog at the minute, my student budget doesn’t really have much room for buying books brand new so when I found my long lost library card last week I made it a mission to go over the weekend and see what they had.

Although their selection was still limited, I did manage to check out two books that intrigued me, Faceless by Alyssa Sheinmel and Mr Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan.

I’ve recently heard about Faceless as I redesigned the cover of Faceless for one of my university projects and the synopsis really intrigued me. I’m not going to lie as soon as I saw this book in my library I literally snatched it up. I couldn’t believe they had something that I had recently added to my TBR and a book I wanted to own and read as soon as possible.

I recognised Mr Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore when I saw it, I think I heard Katrina from Little Book Owl on Youtube discuss it quite a while ago. I picked it up and read the first page and it seemed interesting. One thing I do like about the library is that you can pick up books and if they end up not being your cup of tea you haven’t wasted your hard earned cash on them.

I only picked up two books this trip as one disadvantage about libraries are the limited time you have to read them. I have until May 2nd to read them both which isn’t too bad but with the books I want to get read from my own personal library and these, it’s going to be a push for my April reading as on average I tend to only read around four books a month.

Having said all that I’m really excited for Faceless and intrigued by Mr Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore. Do you use your library often? What do you currently have checked out? Have you read either book I’ve mentioned? Let’s chat in the comments.

until next time,

xoxo, rachel

  1. I use my library very often. I’m really sad about the fact that I no longer read as much as I used to. But I still try lol I currently have 3 books from the library, 2 from my personal library and a borrowed one that I hope to finish until the end of April or maybe May! I’ve actually just written a post about them! xx

    1. Aw awesome! I would totally use my library more if it had a better range. I’ve decided to no longer donate my books to charity and donate them to my library instead and I feel they need it more and it would be more beneficial πŸ™ˆ awesome I’ll go check it out xx

  2. It always makes me sad that people dont use libraries as much as they should! I work in a medium sized library in the UK and when I first started my YA section was 2 shelves worth. We didnt even have ‘the classics’ Divergent, Hunger Games, Forever! but Ive been here a couple years and Ive expanded it into 24 shelves with manga added too as I realized getting young Adults to read is the best feeling in the whole world! xo

    1. Omg that’s amazing! Yeah my library doesn’t have the classics and they only really stock one copy of each book so if someone has the first book in the series you can’t also read it πŸ˜” so happy people like you are making libraries more suited for younger readers. My library needs to take some tips from you πŸ˜‚ I’m thinking of donating my YA books to my library now so they can start getting a bigger range of books πŸ™ˆ

      1. Haha! Its taken a while to persuade the powers that be to make my stock bigger but when I proved a point that these people are a valuable asset they just said go for it! Oh wow! that sucks about the first book >.< Thats a great idea to donate books to your local! Im sure theyll appreciate it! I know I always do! πŸ˜€

  3. I can’t really read books from the library once I graduated secondary school because just like you I prefer to buy my own books. But I actually love getting second hands as it attaches a very personal meaning to the book, just like having an extra story but not expressed in words. That aside, I haven’t really been reading that much once I started uni In fact I yawn a alot when I’m not fully engaged with the story and it’s probably because I’m making poor choices with the books I buy. But I do miss having that escape-from-reality break you get when reading. Will be following you so that I get that constant reminder to grab one from the shelves in my free time rather than binge watching Youtube videos all day. Hopefully you can help me revive that passion for reading that I once had !!

  4. There is something wonderful about stepping into a library and taking in all the wonder that is inside. So many stories waiting to be read and shared! I love our library here. While lately I have been getting more and more electronic books purely out of convenience, I try to make a trip to the library bi-weekly or monthly as a priority.
Love your posts like this. Keep up the good work!

    1. Aw thank you so much! Yeah I was recently heading into a reading slump, I hadn’t read anything in like a week and a half and any book I tried to read I wasn’t in the mood for aha! I went into the library to return the books in this post and I just decided to pick up 3 new ones, that evening I did try a chapter and now I want to read all 3 of them and I’ve nearly finished the first book πŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆ
